» News: PCA General Assembly Commences
The 35th annual PCA General Assembly began this evening at 7:30 central time in Memphis, TN. We will be posting updates through the evening as news emerges. You can watch the broadcast of the General Assembly opening worshipping service online at the PCA General Assembly website. Earlier, the Real Audio stream was not working, but the Windows Media stream worked fine.
9:18 pm Update: The worship service is over and there is a short intermission before the election of a new moderator.
10:09 pm Update: E.J. Nusbaum, Ruling Elder at Village Seven Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs, CO is the new moderator of General Assembly. Nusbaum was the sole nominee. Previous moderator, Dominic Aquila, currently serves as Interim Pastor of Village Seven Presbyterian Church. At the 33rd General Assembly, Nusbaum served as Secretary of the Committee on Constitutional Business (CCB), class of 2007. At the 32nd General Assembly, Nusbaum was also secretary of the CCB. At the 31st General Assembly, Nusbaum served on the CCB, though he was not an officer at that point. Nusbaum is a graduate of the United States Military Academy (West Point), serving seven years of active duty. He has worked as an insurance agent since 1985. He was ordained to the office of Ruling Elder in 1987 and served as Clerk of Session for five years. He also has served on the Rocky Mountain Presbytery MNA Committee among other service rendered to the church. Active in politics and government, in 2005, Nusbaum testified in the Colorado Senate committee on Business, Labor, and Technology against Senate Bill 5 that attempted to restrict the use of credit scoring by insurers in underwriting and rating purposes. He also testified before the House Committee on Business Affairs and Labor in opposition to a similar House bill.

Is the moderator arranged in advance, or is it up for grabs?
Surely it's prearranged. Can't imagine that position being shouldered without preparation.

In theory it's up for grabs (since nominations can be received from the floor), but in actual practice there are typically two nominations prepared in advance. How exactly that process occurs, I have no idea.
EJ Nusbaum - Ruling Elder from Village Seven Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado - was elected Moderator. Village Seven PCA is where current Moderator, Dominic Aquila, serves as Interim Senior Pastor.
That seems fishy, but if he was the only nominee, then how can anyone cast stones?
Two moderators in a row from the same church?
Huh.
Is the moderator position a coveted one, or does the denomination have to wheedle, cajole, and plead to get someone to take it on?
You know, like finding someone to be PTA president. ;-)
Editor,
Its the United States MILITARY Academy at West Point not Marine Academy.

the name of the school has been fixed - thanks for the heads up
Anne-The PCA rotates the office of moderator between RE and TE. When it is the TE year you have more nominations. I am sure TPTB went to Mr. Nusbaum and asked him if he would be willing to serve.
Ah, because the pool of TE's is larger than the pool of RE's, right?
Then maybe it's nothing more sinister than the previous moderator being uniquely positioned to act as dripping water on a stone, eventually wearing the new moderator down due to close proximity. ("C'mon, EJ...it'll be fun!" "No." "Please?" "NO!" "It's for the church, EJ. I did it. I'll be here to help if you need it. C'mon." "C'mon, yourself. I said no, and I meant no." "But, EJ...!")

there are some who covet being moderator and some who run from it.
sadly, too many TE's covet it - they want their name in lights.
RE's are typically too busy to fool with it and can't get enough time off from work to do it.
the roving stone
Is it a year-round position? With duties that carry over after the GA has ended, then?
Anne
Perfect!
Now if the moderator does something that the FV don't like they can scream ...
CONSPIRACY
The stoning Rove
stone,
Well, when you have a 1600 church denomination and it is in the midst of a heated controversy, it might not be wise to put forward an RE from the same church that the last moderator was from. I realise that he was unopposed (the new moderator) but it still looks bizarre.

Well at least CREC isn't alone in dealing with "bizarre".

In response to "anonymous at 6:46 a.m.:
as a TE's wife who has attended many a General Assembly...I can tell you this...
GA business gets over A LOT quicker when an RE is moderator!
:-)
Anonymous above (wife of a TE)
you are correct!
Businessmen hate wasting time and breath on endless discussions "let's get it settled" is their way of biz.
I happen to agree that it 'looks' odd that Mr. Nusbaum and Dr. Acquila are in the same presby/church. But, that's the cast of this year's die.
